A&D Wines : the conquerors of Vinho Verde

Alexandre Gomes comes from a family with a long tradition in agriculture spanning several generations in the regions surrounding the city of Baião, in northwest Portugal, and south of the famous Vinho Verde vineyard.

Drawing on this heritage connected to the land and agricultural activities, he began planting his first vineyard, Casa do Arrabelde, in 1991, with typical local varieties such as Avesso, Arinto, and Alvarinho.

Pleased with the quality of their wines and observing the growing local success of this small production from 5 hectares of vineyards, Alexandre and his wife Dialina established the company A&D Wines in 2005 and planned to expand their infrastructure and vineyard domain. In this context, they acquired Quinta dos Espinhosos, adding an additional 7 hectares to their wine production.

The economic crisis of 2008 made penetrating the Portuguese market more challenging and led the couple to contemplate more deeply on export opportunities.

Having much success with their sales abroad, they decided to step up their game and move forward with a more ambitious project by acquiring Quinta de Santa Teresa in 2015, a vineyard spanning 33 hectares, also located in the Baião region. The goal of this acquisition is to produce approximately 300,000 bottles of wine in the medium term, showcasing the region’s grape varieties and maintaining a working philosophy focused on respecting nature, grapes, and the surrounding biodiversity.

Their desire is also to put Quinta de Santa Teresa on the wine tourism map of the region by developing new infrastructure. They formally launched their wine tourism project in 2019.

Starting in 2016, they created the Monologo range: 5 wines made from single grape varieties from selected plots, which are now making waves worldwide. They also created the Singular cuvée, produced from a blend of indigenous grape varieties from the old vines of Quinta de Santa Teresa and crafted by their friend and oenologist Fernando Moura.

The estate now consists of three vineyards in the Baião sub-region, situated on predominantly granitic soils and benefiting from unique microclimates, at an average altitude of 450 meters where temperature variations between day and night bring ideal maturity to the grapes. They harvest, from 45 hectares, around ten predominantly Portuguese grape varieties allowing them to produce around fifteen cuvées, each as unique as the next. Vineyard work and harvesting are done manually, and fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts. Minimal additives are used during vinification to offer terroir-driven, authentic wines that respect nature and humans.

All vineyards have been converted to organic agriculture and received certification in 2020, making A&D Wines the largest organic wine producer in the Vinho Verde region. The wines are also certified VEGAN, eliminating any animal traces during the production process.
