Claude Vialade, known as the “Woman of Wine,” is the founder of Domaines Auriol, a house with a feminine sensibility and now the second-largest French wine exporter. The family history began with the patriarch Jean Vialade, a pioneer of organic viticulture, nicknamed “The Lion of Corbières,” a charismatic defender of the wine world in the 1960s and 1970s. As a child, Claude accompanied her father, Jean Vialade, in the vineyards and cellars of the estate where he was the estate manager. During the harvest, she would dip her fingers into the fermenting must to her father’s delight. After studying business, Claude began her career in wine distribution in the international market within a leading producers’ group in the region. Ten years later, she left this group to become the director of the Organisme de Défense et de Gestion de l’A.O.P. Corbières, where she spearheaded wine routes, terroir policy, communication, and market economics. However, she felt closer to economics and the field than to unionism and its compromises. She left this position and, in 2000, she founded her wine merchant-vintner company specializing in wines from Southern France. Today, the dynamic and warm Claude is preparing for her succession. At 32, her son, Jordi Salvagnac, is poised to take the helm of the family business.
The headquarters of Domaines Auriol are based in Lézignan. The house now exports 10 to 12 million bottles and distributes, in addition to its four family vineyards and brands, a group of partner winemakers who produce according to specifications defined by Auriol. The four family vineyards and brands, the souls and flagships of the company, are located in the Corbières region in Occitania, in the heart of the Orbieu Valley between the municipalities of Lagrasse and Fabrezan. The vineyards are cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment.
Claude Vialade indeed works with the same philosophy as her father, a staunch advocate of organic agriculture. In 2018, she launched an ecological transition contract to support her partner winemakers in their conversion to organic farming. It not only provides commercial visibility to the producer but also technical and administrative support during the conversion. Domaines Auriol is truly focused on the future.
