Quinta da Biaia : the natural expression of Beira Interior

Quinta da Biaia is a project launched by childhood friends, Carlos Flor and Ricardo Lopez Ferro, both heirs to the lands that now comprise the Quinta da Biaia vineyard. Challenging themselves to produce high-quality wines from organic agriculture that best reflect their native lands, they partnered with Luís Leocádio, a renowned Portuguese winemaker elected as the revelation of the year, with whom they share values and vision. They launched their first wines from an autonomous cellar in 2019.

The vineyard is situated on 100 hectares (of which 29 are used for their wine production) in the Beira Interior DOC, in central Portugal, surrounded by the Côa and Agueda rivers and the Douro river. The region’s soils are predominantly of granite and schist origin, with some veins of quartz.

At average altitudes of 750 meters, the vineyard is located between the slopes of Castelo Rodrigo, a historic medieval village considered one of the 7 wonders of Portugal, and the Serra da Marofa, a mountain ridge that reaches altitudes of nearly 1000 meters. These slopes form a natural barrier for the vines, protecting them from maritime winds and reinforcing thermal amplitudes: hot and sunny summers, cold winters, and low precipitation.

This combination of factors gives rise to wines with high acidity and incredible aging potential: whites with great aromatic exuberance and lots of minerality, and reds with more complex aromas and great aromatic richness. The wines are made from indigenous Portuguese grape varieties such as Fernão Pires, Arinto, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz.

Quinta da Biaia is certified for organic production from grape to bottle, with vinification processes that use no synthetic or animal products (the wines also carry the “Vegan” label), thus showcasing all the unique characteristics of the Beira region.
