Bodegas Aessir : the rediscovered nobility of Bobal
The Bodegas Aessir is led by the masterful hand of Oscar Reboredo.
In parallel with his studies in oenology and viticulture, Oscar began his winemaking career in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, at the heart of the DO Cava. Not coming from a winemaking family and without inheriting any family land, he decided to pursue his passion by organizing various long-term contracts with vine growers and vineyard owners in the region.
It all began when Bodegas Carbomas provided him with some vineyards and a cellar space. There, he participated in his very first production of the La Crusset Brut Nature cuvée, which received international awards and recognition year after year, distinguishing itself from the mass of Cava by the intentional reduction of yields from Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada vines.
Following this experience, he embarked on a new project close to his heart: Essencia Terra. The objective was to find the best terroirs for the cultivation of Bobal, a Spanish indigenous grape variety that he wanted to enhance. He discovered plots in the province of Cuenca, at nearly 1000 meters altitude near a nature reserve, where the combination of Mediterranean and peninsular climate and the temperature variations between day and night make it a unique place for Bobal vinification. He took charge of the cultivation of these 6 hectares of vines, averaging 60 years old, where Bobal and Syrah grow, with the aim of distinguishing himself from the Bobal wine market, where grapes are mostly harvested at low altitudes, resulting in wines with much less depth and freshness.
Enthralled by the terroirs brimming with potential in Terra Alta, he acquires an additional 4 hectares of vineyards planted on clayey-limestone soils, with average altitudes of 500 meters. There, he cultivates Grenache Blanc and Noir as well as Samso (Carignan), yielding three new cuvées once again crafted with the utmost respect for the terroir and traditions of these Spanish indigenous grape varieties.
By choice, he decides to keep his wines under the DO Terra Alta rather than subjecting them to the numerous constraints of the DOP Priorat or even the DO Montsant, which are very popular among Spanish wine consumers. He thus gives his wines all the authenticity they deserve, showcasing a terroir with infinite potential.
All of the vineyards selected by Oscar have not undergone any chemical treatment for over a decade, and therefore come from uncertified organic agriculture. In the cellar, he crafts each of his cuvées as purely as possible, with minimal additives and sulfuring adhering to Demeter standards.
It’s a real delight to taste the cuvées crafted by the great and understated Oscar Reboredo.
