Bodegas Esteban Martin : when quantity rimes with quality
In the beautiful municipality of Aragon, in northeastern Spain, lies one of the country’s oldest PDOs: Cariñena. With its vineyards at high altitudes (from 400 to 800 meters), its soils predominantly composed of red limestone (hence the mention ‘Vino de las Piedras’, wine of stones), its extreme temperature variations (very hot summers and icy winters), and the dominant north wind locally named ‘Cierzo’ sweeping away any risk of bacterial development, the appellation already enjoys an ideal climate for grape growing.
It was on this appellation that businessman Miguel Antonio Esteban and his wife Asuncion Martin decided to invest in 1985 by purchasing 150 hectares of vineyards, and from the outset, the idea of organic agriculture was natural.
The Esteban Martin family has long been involved in agriculture (they have owned the Granja Virgen del Rosario farm since 1964, which is now one of the main poultry farms in Spain), so they embark on this new project, this dream, with considerable experience. Over the years, they acquire more and more new vineyards, until in 2003 they finally decide to build their winery and start producing their own wines.
Today, their vineyard comprises over 400 hectares of vines, 30% of which are already certified organic, but all of which are cultivated with great respect for the environment. In the winery, only indigenous yeasts are used, prioritizing traditional methods. The family business now involves three generations, whose core values are quality, innovation, environmental sustainability, and love for their products and their terroir.
