In 1988, husband and wife Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam founded the winery after being inspired by a visit to French vineyards and spending two vintages at Château Sénéjac in Bordeaux. Today, the second generation of the family—Hunter and his sister Elizabeth, along with her husband Brian Kent—oversee winemaking and viticulture, continuing to build on the estate’s reputation and renown. Frankland Estate achieved organic certification in 2010, reinforcing the winery’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and working in harmony with nature’s cycles. Organic viticulture is based on soil health through enhanced microbiology, which helps improve the elegance and finesse of the wines. The vineyard produces natural wines, with vines pruned by hand and grapes harvested and sorted manually. The wines reflect the distinctive characteristics of their unique vineyard sites.
