Giovanni Almondo : 7 centuries of family history in the Kingdom of Roero
Halfway between the villages of Alba and Asti lies the Località Vittori di Montà. This municipality, located at the northern end of Roero in the prestigious region of Piedmont in Italy, is, due to its geological composition, the ideal place for the cultivation of both flavorful and mineral white wines and elegant and structured red wines.
The DOCG Roero and Roero Arneis owe their reputations to Nebbiolo and Arneis. Other classified grape varieties are also cultivated in the Langhe DOC, including Freisa, Barbera, Chardonnay, Riesling…
The Giovanni Almondo estate is located in the center of Montà, where the Almondo family has always lived (the family is documented in the municipality records dating back to the 14th century), amidst the Arneis vineyards. Arneis is indeed the emblematic grape variety of the estate, which showcases it by bottling it under single vineyard cuvées, thus designating the best expression of this white grape on carefully chosen soils for its planting.
In 1980, after obtaining a degree in agronomic sciences, Domenico Almondo elevated the small family vineyard to a higher level, towards high-quality viticulture. His ambition was to create an Arneis that was both elegant and distinct from its various parcels such as Bricco delle Ciliegie. He also highlighted Nebbiolo and Barbera on Valbianchèra and Bric Valdiana, to name just a few.
Among his many viticultural projects, one of them was to create, in collaboration with the Istituto di Virologia Vegetale – CNR (Italian National Research Council) of Turin, a clonal selection of Arneis, which over the years resulted in new plants representative of this specific terroir and its distinctive parcels.
Today, the 18 hectares owned by the Giovanni Almondo vineyard are entirely managed by the family business, thus ensuring a quality reflected year after year by the wines they produce. The acquisition of cutting-edge technology in the cellar also brings additional precision to their expertise. The estate advocates for chemical-free agriculture and practices low-intervention winemaking in the cellar.
