12 km southwest of Beaune, at the heart of the vineyards, the high-roofed slate towers of the Château de Melin dominate the hamlet of the same name. Since the French Revolution, six generations of winemakers have succeeded one another. In the 1930s, Paul Dumay managed about ten hectares in the Maranges Valley. Upon his death in 1968, his daughter Marie-Claire Derats-Dumay and her husband Jean-Claude took over the Domaine Paul Dumay. Between 1970 and 1995, they acquired numerous small plots in the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits, expanding the estate to 15 hectares. In 2000, their son Arnaud, an engineer by training, who had spent ten years in the construction industry, was drawn back to tradition. Together with his wife Hélène, they purchased the Château de Melin in Auxey-Duresses and decided to establish the family winery there. The Domaine du Château de Melin now operates 22 hectares of vineyards, producing 22 appellations: 20 from the Côtes de Beaune and 2 from the Côtes de Nuits. Since 2009, after several years of sustainable farming, the estate has transitioned to organic farming with the aim of producing high-quality grapes that best express the Burgundy terroir while respecting the environment.
