Mille Roses (Château)

Château Mille Roses was founded in 1999, built on a solid land base, including the château and the vineyard inherited from David’s parents, when he was a young winemaker.

Why Mille Roses? “For the rose bushes cultivated by my mother, for all the rose bushes at the end of the vines in our Médoc, for the richness and aromatic finesse of the wines I wish to produce.”

Sophie and David, the current owner-winemakers, have gradually grown and developed the vineyard, expanding it from half a hectare to a steady 10 hectares. Their conversion to organic viticulture began with the 2010 vintage. It reflects a shared desire to work with greater respect for nature, as well as for the new generation, Jean-Marie and Suzanne, their three children.

Today, Mille Roses has earned a small reputation in the wine world, integrated into a renowned terroir in the South of Médoc…

The winemaking work is essentially about revealing the terroir effect to give the wine its typicity. The management of the vineyard and the know-how in the cellar should not overwhelm the wine’s authenticity; this is the key difference from some wines where excessive human intervention results in uniform products.

The terroir is of a sandy-gravelly nature, formed by gravel hills. The deposits of Garonne gravel (a mix of rolled pebbles and sand), left by the retreat of glaciers during the Quaternary period, impart character to the wines and precisely regulate, through their filtering nature and gentle sloping shape, the water needs of the vines. Thus, the water stress necessary for proper maturation is not excessive. Balance begins in the soil!

Ultimately, the wines of Château Mille Roses faithfully reflect the fantastic terroir of the Médoc, its climate, its land, and the work of the winemakers.

They seek tension in the wines, with a beautiful acidity to carry a ripe and powerful structure, where the “margalais” style imparts great silkiness and finesse to the bottles…
