The first vines of the contemporary Moldovan vineyard are said to have been planted in the 12th century by monks who carefully chose the most ecological and fertile soils. Over time, viticulture has developed and refined, thus defining the most specific terroirs for wine production.
It was in 1998 that Veaceslav Frunze and Gheorge Arpentin founded the Pelican Negru winery in the village of Olanesti, Stefan-Voda district. Consulting Moldovan history and discussing with local farmers and agronomists, they together planted 7 hectares of vineyards in two sections in the village of Olanesti. Gheorge Arpentin holds a Ph.D. in Technical Sciences. Dr. Arpentin was a professor for fifteen years in winemaking at the University of Chisinau in Moldova.
In 2015, he became the director of Wine of Moldova, an association created to promote Moldovan wines worldwide. He was also appointed head of oenology in Moldova. On the international stage, Dr. Arpentin is the director of the “Safety and Health” union of the International Wine Organization. He cares deeply about organic culture, as well as soil and vine respect. The vineyard is entirely managed through sustainable farming practices and is awaiting organic agriculture certification.
In 2012, Jean-Philippe Sauvé, a Quebecois, joined the team to develop the export of these unique wines, particularly in the North American market.
