Located in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers region, Château Sainte-Marie enjoys an optimal geographical position. The vineyards are ideally exposed and spread over two perfectly sunny hills, among the highest in the Gironde. The origins of Château Sainte-Marie date back several centuries. The vineyard was once owned by the monks of the Abbey of La Sauve Majeure, one of the oldest abbeys in France, located 4km from the property. In 1936, Edouard Mondon (pictured opposite) bought the estate to use the pastures for his cows and produce wine in barrels. Having no children, he was very close to his nephew Gilles Dupuch, who like him, was passionate about agriculture, particularly mixed farming: the operation of cows and wine. Mr. Mondon trained his nephew for 10 years and then left him in charge of the operation at his death in 1982.
After discovering the capabilities of the terroirs of Entre-Deux-Mers and their potential to produce great wines, Gilles selected the vines of Château for their quality. Falling in love with oenology and viticulture, he devoted himself to the success of the estate and its appellation, later becoming president of Entre-Deux-Mers. Today, he has passed the company on to his youngest son, Stéphane, who took over the family property in 1997 with the same passion and dedication as his father. He brought his interpersonal skills that have allowed the estate to gain greater international recognition. His love for this unique terroir, combined with his desire to share the source of his passion, Stéphane wants to show in his wines all the possibilities of his region. After more than 20 years at Château Sainte-Marie, the property holds no secrets for him.
