San Giacomo

Podere San Giacomo : Three generations in the land of Sangiovese Rosso

The Podere San Giacomo vineyard is located on the northeast side of Montalcino, at an average altitude of 300 meters above sea level.

A family estate founded in 1993 by Claudio Nardi and his wife Graziella Pieri, the vineyard is now passionately managed by the couple and their daughter Elena, a true all-rounder, who primarily handles marketing but also assists in vineyard work and in the cellar. Her grandfather Bruno is also an integral part of the daily work in the vineyard. Thus, it is in a shared love for the vineyard and well-done work that they invest themselves in the heart of one of the most prestigious DOCGs in Tuscany, and even Italy: Brunello di Montalcino.

The family cultivates 5 hectares of vineyards under the Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino appellations, exclusively planted with Sangiovese Grosso. They also own an additional 2 hectares that they have not yet planted…

Although they work with traditional methods, no chemical elements or herbicides are used in the vineyards. Fermentations are carried out by the indigenous yeasts of the grapes, and their cellar methods are minimally interventionist. This “artisanal” winemaking brings a lot of character and prestige to their wines.

The DOCG Brunello di Montalcino and DOC Rosso di Montalcino appellations both allow only one grape variety: Sangiovese Grosso (characterized by thicker-skinned grapes that lead to elegant and powerful wines), commonly known as Brunello in the region.

Rosso di Montalcino is a lighter and less extracted type of wine compared to Brunello. It also requires a much shorter aging time: a minimum of one year, whereas Brunello requires four years (or five if labeled as “Riserva”). Brunello wines are generally produced with grapes from older vines with lower yields and adhere to much stricter production regulations.
